Day 24'859

The following could solve World Hunger (or just allow McDonald's to sell more french fries in Africa).

AgTech Entrepreneur David Friedberg announced an astonishing breakthrough by his company Ohalo in the latest edition of the All-In Podcast. Link to the episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDr1983LIuo

According to Friedberg, they can now increase the yield of certain crops from 50% to 100% or more and "make crops adapted to all sorts of new environments that you otherwise would not grow food in today".

So, does this mean we are on track to fix the world's malnutrition problem? Unfortunately not. More than one billion people around the globe are clinically obese. It is now the leading form of malnutrition, with almost double the number of people considered underweight.

As Friedberg shared in the same podcast episode, 60% of potatoes in the US go to french fries and potato chips: "Mac Donald's buys most of the fries, Pepsico under Frito Lays buys most of the table chips potatoes. (...)".

Hence, agricultural productivity gains may primarily lead to things like cheaper french fries.

This reminds me of the old saying: "It's not enough doing the THING RIGHT; we also need to do the RIGHT THING."

In the food industry, Mahalo is making an incredible contribution to "doing the thing right" (efficiency). However, other industry players will still need to "do the right thing" and transform this innovation into positive outcomes for society.

Cheaper french fries won't make the world a better place.
